Niñez en Bali (Childhood in Bali)
Gouache on paper, 31 x 23 cm
Project Childhood
Sunsets on the beaches of Nusa Lembongan, Bali, are a place of leisure for visitors and a day's work for a young girl selling floral hair clips. It is the same place, yet separated by a distance no postcard can capture.
The visitor's gaze lingers on the beauty of the sea, the golden sand, and the fading sun. But do those eyes ever notice the girl? Do they recognize that the landscape so many dream of is also stained by child labor?
The girl, meanwhile, inhabits this reality with the innocence of childhood. Perhaps she does not yet imagine that her days could be spent in school, at play, or simply living the childhood that should be hers.
